How to Choose the Right Doujinshi Printing Method?
The cost structure of doujinshi printing is different from that of general commercial book printing. Print quantity and interior page color are the two major deciding factors. HKDC Printing offers both offset printing and digital printing production lines, allowing us to recommend the most suitable workflow based on the booth owner’s quantity and budget:
1. Short-Run Trial Printing, 10–100 Copies: Color / Black-and-White Digital Printing
- Suitable for: First-time publishing, testing a new CP pairing, collaborative sample books, and small event print runs
- Features: No plate-making required, printable from just 1 copy, and suitable for urgent short lead times
- Equipment used: Fuji Xerox Versant 180 Press for color printing; Fuji Xerox Versant B9125 and Ricoh Pro 8320S for black-and-white production printing
2. Medium-Run Formal Publishing, 100–500 Copies: Mainly Digital Printing
- Suitable for: Main event publications, books sold by well-known creators, and official versions of collaborative anthologies
- Features: Color covers and black-and-white interiors can be printed on separate machines to significantly reduce cost
- Recommended combination: Color covers printed with the Versant 180, black-and-white interiors printed with the Ricoh Pro 8320S, then collated and bound together
3. Large-Volume Printing, Over 500 Copies: Offset Printing May Be Evaluated
- Suitable for: Popular creators’ long-term sales titles, reprints, and collaborative publications
- Features: The larger the quantity, the lower the unit cost per sheet, with better color consistency
- Equipment used: KOMORI offset printing press with integrated in-house production
Recommended Doujinshi Binding Methods
Different interior page counts and reading habits will affect the choice of binding method:
| Binding Method | Suitable Page Count | Suitable Book Type | Features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saddle Stitching | 8–60 pages, multiples of 4 | Thin books, short comics, booklets | Lays relatively flat and offers the lowest cost |
| Perfect Binding | 60–250 pages | Novel books, comic anthologies, art books | The spine can be printed with text, giving the book a more professional published look |
| Sewn Binding | 80–300 pages | Thick books and commemorative books intended for long-term preservation | Stronger than perfect binding; interior pages are less likely to come loose |
| Hardcover Binding | No fixed limit | Collector-grade art books, commemorative books, photo books | Highest perceived quality and allows for a higher selling price |
Helpful reminders:
- Saddle-stitched books must have total interior page counts in multiples of 4
- Perfect binding is recommended for books with at least 60 interior pages, so the spine has enough thickness for printed text
- If color and black-and-white interior pages are mixed, please inform us in advance so we can arrange separate-machine printing efficiently
Recommended Paper Options for Interior Pages and Covers
| Part | Common Paper Options | Suitable Applications |
|---|---|---|
| Cover | 250–300g coated paper, with gloss or matte lamination; fine art paper; kraft paper | Enhancing texture and protecting interior pages |
| Color Interior Pages | 100–150g coated paper, art paper, soft matte paper | Art books, illustration collections, full-color comics |
| Black-and-White Novel Interior Pages | 80–100g woodfree paper, uncoated paper, soft matte paper | Comfortable reading with reduced glare |
| Black-and-White Comic Interior Pages | 80–120g uncoated paper, art paper | Balancing text clarity and image quality |

V. Frequently Asked Questions FAQ
Q1: What is the minimum quantity for doujinshi printing?
A: Technically, digital printing can produce just 1 copy. In practice, we recommend at least 10 copies for better cost efficiency. If you are testing demand for an event book, 10–30 copies is a common choice.
Q2: Can I print a book with a color cover and black-and-white interior pages?
A: Yes. This is the most common combination for doujinshi. Covers are printed with a color digital press, Fuji Xerox Versant 180 Press, while black-and-white interior pages are printed with the Ricoh Pro 8320S black-and-white production printer. The pages are then collated and bound together, significantly reducing the cost per copy.
Q3: How should I prepare the artwork files?
A: We recommend providing PDF files with images at a minimum resolution of 300dpi, 3mm bleed, outlined text, and CMYK color mode. We also recommend uploading cover and interior pages as separate files.
Q4: Can you print R18 doujinshi?
A: Printing services must comply with relevant laws and regulations in Taiwan. Please proactively inform us of the content when requesting a quote, so we can confirm whether the project can be printed and whether any required labeling or handling is needed.
Q5: Is there enough time to submit files before FF or CWT?
A: For black-and-white books, we recommend submitting files 2 weeks before the event. For color books, we recommend 2–3 weeks before the event. For books with post-printing processes such as hot foil stamping or hardcover binding, we recommend 3–4 weeks before the event. The 1–2 weeks before peak-season events are high-volume printing periods, so early planning is strongly recommended.
Q6: Can you help with design or layout?
A: HKDC Printing mainly provides printing and production services. We recommend that booth owners complete file layout on their own or work with a designer. If you need prepress file correction or minor adjustments, we can assist with evaluation.
Q7: Can you print a collaborative anthology with mixed specifications?
A: Yes. If a collaborative anthology includes multiple creators, we recommend combining all pages into one complete PDF file after pagination to avoid page order errors caused by uploading separate files.
